Guide & FAQ

Repair PDF

Recover damaged PDFs by rebuilding internal structures.

About this tool

Recover PDFs that won't open, show blank pages, or break after a bad export - without sending the damaged file to an unknown repair server. JoyPDF analyses structure in your browser, re-saves the document tree, and if needed rebuilds pages from rendered images so you can open the file again. Free, no account, with diagnostics explaining what was fixed. Use it when Acrobat reports corruption, email attachments arrive truncated, or a merge left xref tables broken.

What you get

  • Output: a new PDF attempting to preserve all readable pages from the source file.
  • Method 1: structure re-save - fixes many xref, object stream, and parsing errors without re-rasterising.
  • Method 2: image rebuild - renders each page and assembles a fresh PDF when structure is severely corrupted.
  • Diagnostics: page count, size change, issues detected, and whether recovery succeeded.
  • Quality: image rebuild may soften vector text into pictures - prefer structure repair when it works.
  • Limits: truly truncated downloads or encrypted files you can't open may be unrecoverable; repair does not crack passwords.

When to use

  • A PDF fails to open after an interrupted download or flaky USB transfer.
  • Merged or compressed files show error dialogs in Adobe Reader but still partially preview.
  • Legacy archives from old software produce 'invalid xref' or 'damaged file' warnings.
  • You need a readable copy before sending a document to OCR, split, or redact workflows.

Why JoyPDF for this

Online 'repair PDF' services ask you to upload broken files - often contracts, medical records, or discovery exhibits - to their infrastructure. JoyPDF repairs locally: corrupted bytes stay on your device, diagnostics appear in-session, and you choose whether to keep the output. No queue behind other users' uploads when a deadline is tonight.
