What kinds of PDF corruption can JoyPDF fix?

JoyPDF first tries re-parsing and re-saving the PDF - effective for broken cross-reference tables, malformed object streams, and many 'file is damaged' errors where page content still exists. If that fails, it rasterises each readable page and builds a new PDF - recovering visual content when structure is wrecked but pixels still render. It cannot invent missing data from a file truncated mid-download, recover password-locked content without the password, or repair a zero-byte file. Diagnostics tell you which path ran. For business-critical archives, test the repaired file page by page before deleting the original.

Will repair change how my PDF looks?

Structure-only repair usually preserves appearance - text stays vector, images stay embedded. Image-rebuild repair converts each page to a picture inside a new PDF - text may no longer be selectable and fine lines can soften slightly, similar to printing and scanning. Hyperlinks, forms, and bookmarks may be lost in rebuild mode. Check diagnostics: 're-save' means minimal visual change; 'rebuild-images' means treat output like a scan. Run OCR PDF afterward if you need searchable text from a rebuilt file.

Is my corrupted PDF uploaded to repair it?

No. Repair algorithms run in WebAssembly in your browser. The damaged file never travels to JoyPDF servers - important when the corruption itself might expose that a confidential draft existed. Network monitoring during repair shows only app assets loading. On shared PCs, delete downloads after verifying the fix. Keep the original corrupted file if your retention policy requires preserving failed artifacts for audit.

Should I repair before or after OCR and compression?

Repair first if the file won't open or pages are missing - OCR and compress assume a loadable PDF. If the file opens but one section renders blank, repair may restore that section before OCR adds text layers. Compressing a corrupted file can make recovery harder by re-encoding broken streams - repair, verify, then compress if size matters. For a dataroom where only one exhibit fails, repair that exhibit alone before re-merging.

What if repair reports 'unrecoverable'?

JoyPDF returns the original bytes with diagnostics when both strategies fail - usually severe truncation, wrong file type renamed to .pdf, or encryption blocking page copy. Try re-downloading from source, opening in another viewer to export pages manually, or contacting whoever generated the file. Screenshot recovery is a last resort for a few critical pages. Repair is not forensic data recovery on disk - it works on the PDF you provide in-browser.

Repair PDF vs print to PDF - what's different?

Print-to-PDF creates a new file through a print driver - slow, may drop links, and still uploads nothing if done locally. JoyPDF repair targets structural corruption automatically with diagnostics instead of manual reprint workflows. Print-to-PDF helps when a file opens fine but behaves oddly; repair helps when parsers reject the file outright. After successful structure repair, you may not need print at all. Image rebuild is JoyPDF's automated equivalent of print-to-PDF for broken files.
