Merge PDF

Combine multiple PDFs into a single, perfectly ordered file.

Guide & FAQ

About this tool

Combine two or more PDFs into a single file in the order you choose - contracts with appendices, scanned chapters, or invoice batches - without sending anything to a server. JoyPDF loads every source PDF into your browser, lets you drag files and pages into sequence, and exports one merged PDF locally. Page thumbnails update as you reorder, so you catch a wrong document before export. It's free, needs no account, and works when email gateways cap attachment count but allow one combined file.

What you get
  • Output: one standard PDF containing all pages from every source file in your chosen order.
  • Order control: reorder entire documents or individual pages with drag-and-drop before export.
  • Bookmarks: if source PDFs contain outlines, JoyPDF preserves what the PDF format allows; heavily customised bookmark trees may flatten.
  • File size: the result is roughly the sum of inputs - merging does not compress; run Compress PDF afterward if you hit email limits.
  • Mixed sources: combine scans, Word exports, and spreadsheet PDFs in one pass; each page keeps its original resolution.
  • Limits: browser memory caps how many huge files you can merge at once - split very large jobs or merge in batches on older hardware.
When to use
  • Packaging a main contract with schedules, exhibits, and signed scans for a client or court filing.
  • Joining monthly reports, statements, or invoices into one archive PDF for accounting or audit.
  • Building a single submission from separate chapter PDFs after each author exported their section.
  • Replacing a zip of PDFs with one attachment when a portal accepts only one upload.
Why JoyPDF for this

Cloud merge tools upload every file you select - problematic when those files include payroll, medical records, or sealed legal exhibits. JoyPDF merges entirely on your device: files never leave the browser, there's no queue behind other users' jobs, and you see live thumbnails while reordering. That speed and privacy fit teams who merge often but can't route documents through a third-party server.

How to use
  1. 1Add your PDFsDrop multiple files onto the page or use Select files. Each PDF loads into your browser - nothing uploads to JoyPDF.
  2. 2Set the orderDrag whole files or individual pages in the thumbnail grid until the sequence matches what you need to send or archive.
  3. 3Preview the stackScroll the combined page list to confirm covers, blank pages, and appendix order before you commit to export.
  4. 4Download one PDFSave the merged file. Open it in any PDF reader or attach a single document instead of many separate files.

Common questions

How many PDFs can I merge at once?
JoyPDF doesn't impose a fixed count like 'ten files maximum.' The practical limit is your browser's available memory and CPU. Merging twenty small letter-size PDFs is usually instant; merging five scanned books at 300 dpi each may stall on an older laptop. If the tab becomes unresponsive, merge in two batches and merge those outputs, or remove unnecessary high-resolution scans first with Compress PDF. Mobile browsers tolerate fewer large files than desktop Chrome or Edge. Start with your must-have documents, add optional appendices second, and watch the page counter in the UI for total page count before export.
Can I merge PDFs in a custom page order, not just file order?
Yes. After files load, the thumbnail grid lets you drag individual pages - pull page 1 from file B between pages of file A, move a signature page to the end, or drop blank scans. Whole files can be reordered as blocks too. The preview list reflects the exact export sequence. This matters when someone emailed exhibits out of order or when you need a cover sheet from a separate PDF first. Changes stay local until you download; refreshing the page clears the session, so finish merge before navigating away.
Will merging reduce PDF quality?
Merging is non-destructive: JoyPDF concatenates page content without re-encoding images unless the PDF structure requires normalisation. Text stays vector text; photos keep their embedded resolution. You won't see generation loss from the merge step itself. Total file size increases because you're adding pages, not recompressing. If the combined file exceeds an email limit, use Compress PDF on the merged output with a quality slider you control. Avoid merging already heavily compressed scans twice through different online tools - one merge plus one careful compression is enough.
Are my files uploaded when I merge PDFs?
No. Each PDF is read from your device into browser memory and written into a new file locally. JoyPDF has no server-side storage step for merge - the network tab stays quiet apart from loading the app itself. That's essential for confidential bundles: M&A datarooms, HR disciplinary packs, and patient records shouldn't pass through an unknown cloud. On shared PCs, close the tab after download. Private browsing works; just remember closing the window clears unsaved work if you haven't exported yet.
Can I merge password-protected PDFs?
If you know the password, unlock the PDF first with JoyPDF's Unlock PDF tool, then merge the decrypted copy. JoyPDF can't merge locked files you can't open - encryption blocks page copying at the format level. After merge, you can Protect PDF again with a new password on the combined file if policy requires. Some corporate PDFs restrict assembly (printing or merging); those permissions carry forward and may block export - check the source document's security settings in Adobe Acrobat or your issuer's instructions.
What's the difference between merge PDF and organize PDF?
Merge PDF is built for combining multiple files into one output - the primary action is joining sources. Organize PDF focuses on rearranging, rotating, and deleting pages within a single document or a small set, ideal when one file is almost right but page order is wrong. If you have three separate contracts to unite, use merge. If you have one scanned PDF with pages upside down and duplicates, use organize. You can merge first, then organize the combined file, or organize each source before merging - workflow depends on whether the problem is multiple files or messy pages inside one file.
