Common questions

Will my formatting survive the PDF to Word conversion?

For typical business PDFs - one column, standard headings, bullet lists, and simple tables - JoyPDF preserves structure well because it rebuilds the document rather than dumping plain text. Complex layouts are harder: side-by-side columns, text wrapped around images, master pages, and nested tables may shift or stack vertically in Word. Footnotes and endnotes often need checking. The preview step lets you spot major issues before download. If the PDF was exported cleanly from Word originally, you'll usually get back something close; if it was designed in InDesign or scanned, expect to spend a few minutes tidying styles in Word afterward.

Can JoyPDF convert a scanned PDF to an editable Word file?

Not directly in one pass if the scan is a flat image. A scanned PDF contains pictures of pages, not selectable text, so a PDF-to-Word tool has nothing structural to rebuild - you'd get images placed on Word pages instead of editable paragraphs. Use JoyPDF's OCR PDF tool first to add a searchable text layer, then convert to Word, or retype short sections manually. OCR quality depends on scan resolution, skew, and language; faint stamps and handwriting reduce accuracy. For archival scans you only need to quote from occasionally, OCR plus Word edit is still faster than typing ten pages from scratch.

Is my document uploaded to JoyPDF's servers?

No. The conversion runs locally in your browser using WebAssembly. When you select a file, it stays on your device; JoyPDF reads bytes in memory and writes a new .docx without sending the PDF over the network. That matters for NDAs, medical records, unreleased financials, and any file your employer marks confidential. Clear your browser tab when finished if you're on a shared computer - JoyPDF doesn't store files on a server because it never receives them. Your browser may keep the file in memory until you close the tab, which is standard browser behaviour, not cloud storage.

What Word versions can open the downloaded file?

JoyPDF outputs standard .docx (Office Open XML), which opens in Microsoft Word 2007 and every later version on Windows and Mac, plus Word Online, Google Docs, LibreOffice Writer, and Apple Pages with good compatibility. Very old .doc (Word 97-2003) format is not produced - if a recipient needs .doc, save as that format from Word after download. Embedded fonts from the PDF are not packaged into the .docx unless they were already licensed embeddable fonts in the source; Word will substitute Arial, Calibri, or your default body font where needed.

Why does my Word file look different from the PDF?

PDF and Word describe layout differently. PDF fixes positions on a page; Word flows text in paragraphs with styles. JoyPDF maps PDF structure into Word constructs, but line breaks, spacing, and column widths won't match pixel-perfect - especially near page breaks and in tables with merged cells. Custom corporate fonts, spot colours, and vector logos may rasterise or swap to system fonts. Headers and footers sometimes land in the body section. That's normal for any PDF-to-Word converter, not a JoyPDF bug. For court submissions or print-ready work, compare page by page and adjust styles; for content editing, focus on text accuracy rather than identical pagination.

Can I convert multiple PDFs to Word in one session?

Yes. Process them one at a time on the same page - there's no batch queue and no sign-in. Each conversion is independent: load PDF A, download the .docx, then load PDF B. Nothing is retained on JoyPDF servers between runs because processing is local. On a slow machine, wait for one job to finish before starting the next to avoid memory pressure with huge files. If you routinely merge chapters before editing, consider Merge PDF first, then convert the combined file, or convert separately and stitch sections in Word with section breaks.
