Common questions

How is extract pages different from split PDF?

Extract Pages produces one PDF with your selected sheets - a single excerpt file. Split PDF often produces multiple outputs - separate files per range or per page. Choose extract when you need pages 4, 9, and 11 together in one attachment. Choose split when you need chapters 1-5 as file A and chapters 6-10 as file B, or every page as its own PDF. Extract is 'keep these'; split is 'divide into parts.' Both use thumbnails and run locally; the workflow depends on how many files the recipient expects.

Can I extract non-consecutive pages into one PDF?

Yes. Click scattered thumbnails or enter 2, 5, 8-10 - JoyPDF assembles them into one PDF in ascending page order from the source (page 2 before page 5, etc.). If you need a custom reading order different from original numbering, extract then Organize PDF to drag pages into sequence. Useful for bundling signature, initials, and notary pages from different positions in a long contract. Each page's content is unchanged - only grouping differs.

Will extracted pages keep the same quality as the original?

Yes. JoyPDF copies page content streams into the new file rather than screenshotting them - embedded images, vector diagrams, and text remain as in the source. No watermark is added. File size scales with selected pages: extracting one text page from a 200-page scan-heavy PDF yields a small file; extracting fifty scan pages yields a large one. Compression is separate - run Compress PDF on the excerpt if email size matters. OCR text layers, if present in source pages, generally carry over.

Do page numbers update after extraction?

Footer or header page numbers printed on the page content stay visually whatever they were in the source - extract doesn't rewrite 'Page 47 of 200' to 'Page 1 of 3.' If you need fresh numbering, use Add Page Numbers on the excerpt after export. PDF viewer page labels (logical numbering) may reset in the new file depending on structure. For court filings requiring 'Page 1 of N' on exhibits, plan a numbering pass after extraction rather than assuming automatic renumbering.

Is my full PDF uploaded to extract a few pages?

No. The entire file is read locally so thumbnails and extraction can run, but bytes are not transmitted to JoyPDF servers - processing stays in browser memory on your device. That distinction matters for dataroom PDFs where even transient cloud storage violates policy. Only you download the excerpt; JoyPDF has no copy. Clear the tab on shared machines after export. Auditors can verify network isolation during extraction if your security team requires proof of local-only handling.

Extract pages vs remove pages - which tool do I need?

Extract Pages keeps what you select and drops everything else into a new file - you work from a positive list ('these pages'). Remove Pages deletes what you mark and keeps the remainder in one PDF - a negative list ('not these pages'). Extract when you want a small bundle to send outward. Remove when you want a cleaned full document minus junk pages. Same thumbnails, opposite logic. If you mark three pages in extract, output has three pages; if you mark three for removal, output has total minus three.
